Red Jonaprince is a deep red, very early colouring Jonagold clone on which plant protection was applied for in 1995. Red Jonaprince was discovered on a tree of 'Jonagold Princen' (itself a clone discovered in 1987) in the orchards of Princen Brothers in Weert (NL) in 1994.

Fruit Qualities
Red Jonaprince is unique because it colours very early in the season as a full block red. This excellent colour appears on all the fruit at the same time. This includes all apples that are in shaded parts of the tree which allows a single picking operation. The full colour of the fruit had formed by the September 2nd. in l997 and even earlier by August 29th. in 1996.

The optimum picking time for Wilton's® Red Jonaprince is the 3rd. week September. It would be very tempting to pick this variety too soon because of the unusually early colouring and it is therefore essential for the benefit of excellent flavour and storage potential that picking is left until the correct time. Wilton's® Red Jonaprince distinguishes itself very clearly from all other Jonagold mutants both with intemal and external qualities.
