Sampion Hybridisation of: Origin: Strizowice, Czech Republic, 1970 |
![]() |
Morphologic description:
The trees grow pretty strong in the beginning, later the growth decreases
very much and becomes even weak. The crown is cone-shaped with a lot of leaves.
The flowering period is middle-early. Sampion has flowerbuds on the one year
old branches and on the two year old branches.
The branching is very good, it gives a dense crown. Fertility sets in very soon
and is good. There is a little chance alternation if the fruits haven't been
thinned enough.
Fruit:
Medium-sized, smooth skin, green-yellow background with about 50% brightly
red blush. The fruits are not striped and even coloured. For good colouring
sufficient light is necessary. The pulp is creme-coloured and has a fine grain-structure.
Very good taste with sufficient juice.
Fertilization:
For the most part selffertile, diploid. Good pollinators are Golden Delicious,
James Grieve and Gloster. Gives good pollen itself for varieties with the same
flowering period.
Properties:
The flowering buds are moderate frost tender, but because there are always
sufficient flower buds present, this is not a bad property. Moderate susceptible
to Scab and Cancer. Not susceptible to mildew and Erwinia amylovora. Can be
preserved in normal coldstore till February. In CA-coldstore much longer. During
preservation the fruits remain of good quality. The tree requires good soils
with sufficient water. This variety is suitable for intensive plantations. Thinning
is necessary because of the great fertility. At a greater age growth-stimulating
pruning is necessary.
Picking time:
End of September, beginning of October.
